Femininity Flashcards
“Panic, that drove…”
“Panic, that drove me from one to another, hunting for some protection”
Metaphor - Blanche previously calls herself a tarantula
Ironic - she thinks she is seeking protection by sleeping with men when in reality it is that which is causing her social death
Blanche completely relying on men
“Thank you for being so kind. I need kindness now”
She can only manipulate the people who she doesn’t know
Confides in strangers
Blanche says this to Mitch when discussing his build and strength
Sampson! Go on, lift me!
“Nobody, nobody, was…”
“Nobody, nobody, was tender and trusting as she was. But people like you abused her, and forced her to change”
“whoever you are - I have always relied on the kindest of strangers”
Why is this quote ironic?
Blanche’s dependence on “the kindness of strangers” rather than on herself, is the reason why she has suffered so greatly
In reality, these strangers have only used her to fulfil their own sexual desire
The quote also indicates Blanche’s complete detachment from reality as she chooses to see life through her own false perception
