How are reproductive and urinary tracts related?
Developmentally closely related
Homologous

Size and shape of the uterus?
A pear
What is the function of the uterus?
- accepts the fertilised egg (ovum)
- implants the fertilised egg into the endometrium
- nurtures and grows the fertilised ovum that then develops into the foetus
What are the two main subdivisions of the uterus?
- Fundus

What is the internal os?
Opening into the uterus
What is the external os?
Opening into the vagina
What is meant by version of the uterus?
Angle of the cervix to the vagina: displacement of the organ forwards and backwards
What is meant by flexion of the uterus?
Angle of the uterus to the cervix: bending back on itself
What are the main relations to the uterus?
- bladder
- uterus
- rectum
- vagina
What is the broad ligament?
Flat sheet of peritoneum, associated with uterus, Fallopian tubes and ovaries
- extends from the lateral pelvic walls on both sides
- folds over the internal female genitalia, covering the surfaces anteriorly and posteriorly
Why will the ovaries appear very small in the cadaver?
Graafan follicles are bulges in the sides of the ovaries
(probably wont be present in the cadaver as these disappear post-menopause_
What is the ovarian ligament?
Connects the ovary to the lateral side of the uterus
What is the suspensory ligament?
Connects the ovary to the anterior abdominal wall superiorly (ovarian artery and vein pass over it)
Round ligament
Remnant of gubernaculum extending from the uterine horns to the labia majora via the inguinal canal
- maintains the anteverted position of the uterus
