Symptoms in men include yellow-white discharge, and painful urination. symptoms in women include discharge and burning sensation. Can lead to sterility in women and PID. Overall, can develop into blood borne infection arthritis, attacks heart muscles and lining, and sterility. diagnosis includes analysis of male’s urethra, female’s cervix, and the throat and anus.
HSV1-2/herpes
blisters on skin/mucus membranes. transmission happens with close contact with with mucus membranes or abraded skin. symptoms include cluster of blistery sores, inability to urinate if sores swell and block urethra, and itching/pain in infected area. no cure, just treatment like Acyclovir
Trichomoniasis
common STI caused by protozoan parasite. most can’t tell they’re infected. women infected in lower genital tract (vulva, vagina, cervix, urethra). men infected in urethra.q
HPV/genital warts
most common STI infection in US. 20 million americans. Most don’t know they’re infected. cauliflower growth in genital and/or rectal areas. no cure, only removal of warts. can lead to cancer
HIV (human immunodeficiency virus)
casual contact doesn’t spread HIV. only needles, and sexual, vaginal, oral, and anal. HIV can live in blood, semen, vaginal fluid, and breast milk. symptoms include swollen lymph nodes, fever chills, night sweats, diarrhea, weight loss, coughing and shortness of breath, fatigue, skin sores, blurred vision and headaches, and development of other infections like pneumonia. 3-6 months for body to develop antibodies, so negative results may be false depending on timing. diagnosis dependent on CD4 count of less than 200 cells per cubic mm of blood. no cure. therapies include HAART (highly active antiretroviral therapies).
Bacterial vaginosis
imbalance of good and bad bacteria found in vagina. transmitted via sex but also excessive douching and sitting in baths.
