Female gametes Flashcards
Process of meiosis (3)
- Foetal life (mitosis bulk, entrance to meiosis)
- Childhood (12-50 paused after first division)
- Adulthood (menopause, completion of meiosis)
What occurs during puberty?
Follicle Stimulating hormone released to stimulate follicle development
Structure of a primary follicle
Granulosa cells linked to oocyte cells vis cytoplasmic bridges
What happens to ripen the follicle?
Oocyte synthesises zona pellucida glycoprotein
Granulosa cells multiply
Granulosa cells in extensive gap junction communication
What happens to develop the maturing follicle?
Granulosa cells secrete follicular fluid into cavity/ antrum
Effect of LH at critical stage
Receives surge of LH (thecal cells bind, aromatized to oestrogen)= continues to develop into Graafian follicle
Not received= death
What occurs during preovulatory growth?
Primary oocyte undergoes meiosis 1, expels first polar body to form secondary oocyte, connection with granulosa lost
How is the secondary oocyte released?
Digests way out, ruptured follicle releases oocyte to enter fallopian tube
What happens to the remains of the ruptured follicle?
Becomes Corpus Luteum, produces hormones progesterone and oestrogen to prepare lining of uterus for embryo transplantation, dies after week if not pregnant
What does exogenous FSH do?
Stimulates oogenesis
Main difference to men?
No germ line stem cells
