feeding and nutrition Flashcards
Name the carbohydrates baised on their sugars
Monosachorides - 1
Disachorides- 2
Polysacorides- 3+
What are proteins made of?
Amino acids
What bonds form proteins?
Peptide bonds
What 2 elements make up fatty acids
Hydrogen + Carbon
Name the group that make the fatty acid reacitive
Carboxyl group
-COOH
What is a carnivore
Eats meat
What is an herbivore
Eats plant matter
What is an omnivore
Eats plants and meat
What is the 2 sub catogorys for carnivores?
Insectivores and piscivores
Insectivores eat insects like an ardvark
Piscivores eat fish like a puffin
What is the 2 sub catogorys for Herivores?
Folivores and frugivores
Folivores eat leaves like a giraffe
Frugivores eat fruit like a mainswolf
What is the gap inbetween teeth called? between the incisors and molers
Diastema
Name the 7 major nutrients
Carbohdyrates,
Proteins,
fats/lipids,
vitamins,
minerals,
water,
fiber.
What are the building blocks of carbohdyrates?
Monosacoride - 1
Disacoride - 2
Polysacoride - 3+
What are the building blocks for fats/lipids?
Fatty acids - carboxal group - COOH
What are the building blocks for proteins?
Amino acids
Explain what a carnivores dentions looks like?
Has canine, incisors and harly any molers
Explain what a herbivores dentions looks like?
-Some have got teeth to fight off predators
-Sharp incisors for tearing plants
-Hard dental pad rather than teeth on their top jaws
-Small or non-existent canine teeth
-Strong, flat molars that are made for grinding plant material
-Jaws that can move from side to side, helping them to grind their food
Explain what a omnivores dentions looks like?
Has canines, incisors and molers with the jaw moving up and down.
Name a type of digestion and explain what it is and an example species,
Monogastric - has 1 stomache chamber, is a simple type digestion found within cats/dogs/pigs.
Ruminant - has 4 stomache chambers, they chew the cud, always look likt they are eatting, herbivores/ 2 hooved cattle.
Hind gut fementers - horses/rabbits/ostrich
Avian - chickens/turkeys
What is an Ancillary organ?
An organ that helps with digestion like lips, teeth, tounge or salivary galnds.
other types further into the body are Liver, Pancreas and kidneys.
How many stomach chambers does ruminant digestion have?
4
The Rumen
The Reticulum
The Omasum
The Abomasum
When does regurgitation happen?
After the Reticulum
then when redigested
it goes into the Omasum.
Do all types of digestion regurgitate?
No only Ruminant
