Feeding Flashcards
What is dysphagia?
DIfficulty swallowing
What are the potential causes of dysphagia?
Stroke
Brain injury
Multiple Sclerosis
GORD
Tumours
How would you test for dysphagia?
Test the 10 cranial nerves- motor and sensory responses from both sides of the face and oropharynx.
Describe the stages of swallowing?
- Ingestion
- Stage 1 transport
- Mechanical processing
What is the squeeze back mechanism?
Forward movement of the tongue creates a contact between the tongue and hard palate.
Contact zone gradually moves posteriorly, squeezing the processed food through the fauces.
Where are liquids and solids swallowed from?
Liquids are swallowed form the mouth proper- oral seal
Solids are swallowed from the oropharynx- no oral seal.
Why do you need to consider chewing and tongue movements when designing dentures?
Allows you to determine whether cusp or cuspless teeth are required.
Tongue movement determines where the teeth should be placed on the ridge during placement- lower arch the teeth should be directly over the ridge. Upper ridge the teeth should be placed buccally to the ridge.
