Feedback Control in the Cardiovascular System Flashcards
what is blood pressure
it is the hydrostatic outward pressure exerted by the blood on blood vessel walls
what is systolic arterial bp?
the pressure exerted by the blood on the walls of the aorta and systemic arteries when the heart contracts
what is diastolic arterial bp?
the pressure exerted by the blood on the walls of the aorta and systemic arteries when the heart relaxes
what is the range for normal arterial bp in people under 80?
120/80mmHg - 90/60mmHg
what is hypertension?
when clinical bp is 140/90mmHg or higher and daytime average of 135/85mmHg or higher
what is pulse pressure?
it is the difference between systolic and diastolic blood pressures
ie normal pulse pressure is usually 30-50mmHg
what does MAP stand for?
mean arterial blood pressure lol
what is MAP?
it is the average arterial blood pressure during a single cardiac cycle
what is MAP?
it is the average arterial blood pressure during a single cardiac cycle
what is significant about a normal cardia c cycle?
the diastolic portion of the cardiac cycle is twice as long as the contraction portion
ie why you can’t just average both dia/systolic blood pressure to find out MAP

how to estimate MAP?
3
what is a normal range for MAP?
70-105mmHg
what is a normal range for MAP?
70-105mmHg
what is the minimum MAP and why is it vital?
we need a MAP of at least 60mmHg to perfuse vital organs like the brain, heart and kidneys
