feedback Flashcards
what is feedback
information received by a performer that relates to their performance; its purpose is to allow improvement for future performance
types of feedback
Feedback can be:
-Positive/negative
-Knowledge of results/knowledge of performance
-Extrinsic/intrinsic
positive feedback
Positive feedback involves praise; a performer is told when they are doing something right; this is essential because:
It means performer knows to repeat an action in the same way
can be highly motivating
what is good and bad about positive feedback
adv-It means performer knows to repeat an action in the same way can be highly motivating.
disadv- could over emphasise the success and make the performer feel that they dont need to develop further
what is negative feedback
Negative feedback involves telling a performer that they have done something incorrectly;
-Discussion of how to correct the action for the future
what is good and bad about negative feedback
adv - helps the performer prioritise specific elements in need of development.
disadv - can be demoralising for performers to hear too much negative feedback
knowledge of performance
Knowledge of performance (KP) feedback relates to individual performance regardless of any final result, e.g. The timing of a backhand stroke in tennis
what is good and bad about knowledge of performace
adv-focusing on elements that went good and bad, a performer can develop an understanding of their strengths and weaknesses
disadv- too complex for beginners to understand so must be carefully tailored to suit the level of the performer
knowledge of result
Knowledge of results (KR) feedback involves knowing outcome of performance; this is likely to be a statistic that forms part of a final result, e.g.
The score at the end of a tennis match
what is good and bad about knowledge of results
adv - gives performer a quick and simple measure of their success
disadv - focusing on results can be demotivating , a person who won may not focus on their weaknesses
