Q

Tell me about yourself (option 2?)

A

I am Amy Horton. I’m studying Supply Chain Management at the University of Texas at Dallas. I was awarded an award for being the Outstanding Undergraduate Student In Operations and Supply Chain Management in my undergrad at UNT. This was an extremely big accomplishment for me because I strive for excellence and I was really upset when I first lost my 4.0 GPA, and then when I again didn’t get a 4.0 another semester and my GPA dropped below 3.9 and I was no longer to graduate with summa cum laude honors.

Q

Why are you interested in this internship?

A

I am fascinated by the courier services industry. Most people don’t think about how their packages arrived at their doorstep, or how retail stores get all their inventory, but I am intrigued by the whole process and how delivery companies manage to successfully deliver so many packages everyday even with the continuing growth of e-commerce. But the part that really spoke to me about this internship was the chance to actually expand my knowledge and apply that knowledge in the work force. I believe this internship will give me the opportunity to gain some insight on how this industry operates and that it will be a challenging and beneficial experience for me.

–this question allows you to give your interviewer a solid and specific reason to hire you instead of any other candidate. Provide your interviewer with a career or academic story that highlights a unique success that may be pertinent to the position’s primary objective, and build on that as you continue your response.

A

–I’m the type of person that believes there is always more to learn that I can benefit from. I got my bachelors in Operations and Supply Chain Management, but I felt as if there was still soo much more that I needed to learn. The supply chain is very broad and complex, so I knew I needed to learn more before I was truly ready to start my career and be able to do the best job that I can do. I don’t just want to do well at my job; I want to put my all in it and do the best that I can. While some of my classmates were just trying to pass their classes, I was actually trying to learn and get the best grade that I could get.

Q

What do you want to learn from this internship?//What do you wish to gain out of this internship?

-There are many things you can gain from an internship: additional skills and education, networking opportunities, mentorship, etc. Don’t simply state, “I’m hoping to fulfill my requirement for my major.” Instead, tell the employer what you hope you’ll learn. Do you want to know more about the industry? The company? Do you hope you’ll refine your writing skills, learn a new technology, etc.?

A

I’m hoping this internship will help me learn how to apply what i’ve learned to the workforce. I would also really like to learn more about this industry. In addition, I would really love to get the chance to talk with more employees in this industry about how they got into it, what they’ve learned during their years working, what they like about it, etc.

Q

Why did you choose your major?
-Your answer to this question should reflect your passion and interest in the field you chose. discuss what you enjoy about the industry you’re studying and why you could see yourself working in it.

A

I realized as a teenager that i’m interested in how things work. For example, i don’t think most people really even think about how packages they ordered got to their door, other than it just being dropped off by a delivery man. Or how products get to the many retail stores throughout the world. But I think its an amazing process. Supply chain management is at the center of constant change. With all the new insights, new customer demands, innovative new processes, new regulations to comply with, new economic circumstances, etc., and because of that, theres always a need to improve and maintain processes and operations. The supply chain is such a broad concept that is just increasing in complexity. I think its fascinating and exciting to learn about and be involved with it.

Q

Give me an example of when you worked with a team.

–Focus and elaborate on an example that highlights your collaborative skills, your individual role within the greater team, and how you communicated effectively within your team dynamic.

A

-In my Management of Projects and Systems class, we were assigned a group project to come up with a final investment proposal to produce a million wine boxes including ten sections over the production system that represent an operating system/function in our proposed business.
-My role was to organize all of the work required and come up with small deadlines throughout the semester to ensure we always stayed on the right track, as well as work on one of the ten sections.
-This project was worth 40% of our grade, so it was important that we worked together as a team.
—-
-Because some sections of the project required information from other sections before they could be worked on, or completed, I made sure we were meeting at least once a week and sharing with the group what information we’ve gotten for our parts so far.

Q

Give me an example of a time you worked on multiple assignments during one time.

—– The ability to work well on different assignments simultaneously is a respectable skill, and by asking this question, interviewers will be able to determine whether or not you would do well in situations that would require you to do so. Multi-tasking skills will inevitably be beneficial to any intern that is in charge of working with various sectors of the organization/company, so choose an example that showcases your ability to work under such conditions with efficacy and accuracy.

A

Practically every semester during my coursework I have had to work on multiple assignments that were all due at the same time. I found the best way to do this successfully is by scheduling and prioritizing my time at the start of the assignments. I look at all the tasks that each assignment requires and figure out which ones are likely to require more time and effort than others so that I can prioritize my time effectively. No matter what, I make sure that I am making progress on every assignment and ensure they are all on the track for being completed on time.

Q

Provide an example of a time in which you solved a problem for an employer, peer, or customer.

A

My parents own a small-business and my mom an her employee were having trouble filling orders in a timely manner because of the way their inventory in the warehouse was organized. I asked them to explain to me what were some specific difficulties and things they didn’t like were. Having getting their insight and analyzing their inventory and current layout, I found a more efficient way to organize the inventory. After the change, they both were amazed at how much quicker they were able to fill orders and that there was a better inventory layout all along.

Q

Tell me about a team project when you had to work with someone difficult.

A
  • During one of my semesters in undergrad, I had a group project in two of my classes and the same classmate in each of my groups.
  • This particular classmate was also an acquaintance outside of class that I had a disagreement with. It was so minor and trivial that I didn’t expect this person to bring her personal feelings into our group work.
  • Unfortunately, this person was ruthless and was letting her personal feelings affect the team and our project.
  • I was taken aback by her actions, but I remained calm and waiting till our group meeting was over to speak with her.
  • I acknowledged her feelings regarding our disagreement and I explained to her that this was a personal matter between us and our groups don’t deserve to have the project affected by it.
  • I asked her if there was anyway we could come up with a solution and treat everyone equally as group members.
  • Eventually she agreed that it would be beneficial for the group if she could separate her personal feelings from our groups.
  • As a result, the next group meetings were able to be productive because she stopped bringing her personal feelings into it and started treating me like an actual group member.
  • We successfully completed each requirement for each project on time.
  • Not only did we get an A on both projects, but we also made it to the next round for the case competition project over many other groups in our class.
