what are interstate compacts and what issues do they deal with

A

agreement between 2 or more states/foreign states
deal with issues such as 1) Conservation of resources 2) Fighting forest fires 3) Combat water and air pollution 4) Harbor Control
- all 50 states are apart of the Compact for Supervision of Parolees and Probationers and the Compact for Juvenile Delinquents

what is Full Faith and Credit and what are the exceptions

A

states must recognize the validity of records, documents, and civil court decisions in other states
1) Documents/Records (birth certificates, marriage licenses, property deeds, etc.)
2) Civil Court Decisions (wills, divorce decrees, etc.)
- exceptions: Quickie Divorces and criminal laws (states do not have to enforce other states criminal laws)

what is extradition and what is its purpose

A

Extradition is the legal process by which a fugitive from justice in one state is returned by another state
- prevents fugitive from escaping justice

what is Privileges and Immunities

A

states cannot draw unreasonable distinctions (discriminations) between their own residents and residents of other states
- must allow them to buy, own, rent, or sell property. marry within its borders, make contracts, etc.
reasonable distinctions
1) can’t vote
2) can’t hold public office
3) can’t practice law, medicine, teach, etc. (without state certifictaion)
4) they can charge more for college tuition and hunting/fishing licenses, etc.
