congress
a formal meeting or series of meetings for discussion between delegates, especially those from a political party or labor union or from within a particular discipline.
Executive branch
the person or branch of a government responsible for putting policies or laws into effect.
Legislative Branch
having the power to make laws.
Judicial Branch
of, by, or appropriate to a court or judge.
President
the elected head of a republican state.
Vice-President
an official or executive ranking below and deputizing for a president.
census
an official count or survey of a population, typically recording various details of individuals.
Supreme Court
the highest federal court in the US, consisting of nine justices and taking judicial precedence over all other courts in the nation.
House of Representatives
The lower house of the United States Congress. With 435 popularly elected officials, the House (as it is often called) is the most representative body in the federal government. House seats are apportioned (see apportionment) relative to each state’s population.
Senate
the state council of the ancient Roman republic and empire, which shared legislative power with the popular assemblies, administration with the magistrates, and judicial power with the knights.
liberalism
Liberalism is a political philosophy or worldview founded on ideas of liberty and equality.
conservatism
A general preference for the existing order of society, and an opposition to efforts to bring about sharp change.
checks and balances
A fundamental principle of American government, guaranteed by the Constitution, whereby each branch of the government (executive, judicial, and legislative) has some measure of influence over the other branches and may choose to block procedures of the other branches.
democracy
a system of government by the whole population or all the eligible members of a state, typically through elected representatives.
politics
the activities associated with the governance of a country or other area, especially the debate or conflict among individuals or parties having or hoping to achieve power.
