What happens to monosaccharides obtained from the digestion of starch?
Absorbed by intestinal epithelial cells and travel to the liver via the hepatic portal vein
What are chylomicrons? What happens to them?
. TAGs, proteins, lipids, cholesterol packaged up
. Chylomicrons are secreted into the lymphatic system then enter the bloodstream via the thoracic duct
What is refeeding syndrome? What kind of patients can experience this?
. When complications arise after not having eaten for a long time (around 7 days or more)
. Patients with chronic alcoholism, anorexia, cancer can sometimes experience this
What happens during starvation (7 days or more)
. Protein and muscle breakdown is inhibited
. Decreased insulin, increased glucagon
. Glycogenolysis, gluconeogenesis, lipolysis, protein breakdown
