A

Associated with a fever that is not the result of an intracranial infection or metabolic imbalance and are usually related to a viral illness

Risk Factors

A
  1. Young age at first febrile seizure
  2. Family History of febrile seizures
  3. High Fever
  4. Common in boys

Signs and Symptoms

A
  1. Rapid rise in core temperature; 102.2 °F or higher (commonly with viral)
  2. Lasting less than 15 mins (usually a few seconds to 10 mins)
  3. Occurs once in a 24-hour period and is accompanied by a fever without any CNS infection present.
  4. Benign and no longer term effect

A
  1. Reassure parents of the benign nature of febrile seizures
  2. Counsel parents on controlling fever
  3. Discuss how to keep a child safe
  4. Instruct when to call the physician and take their child into the ER
