What was Order No 1?
First official degree stated by the Petrograd Soviet ordering obedience to the PS by forcing soldiers to only obey the PG when it did not contradict the PS - described by Trotsky as the “most important document to come out of the F.R”
Long-term Causes
-1905 Russo-Japanese war embarrassing loss of 8 battleships and over 70,000 soldiers; mutiny on battleship Potemkin in 1905
-Widespread poverty: inflation at 200%
-The Tsar and his autocracy: Heavy taxes levied on peasants, which they couldn’t afford due to successive harvest failures
Short-term causes
-WW1: Losses at Tannenburg and Masuria led to 6 million losses in two years
-Tsarina + Rasputin: paranoia surrounding the Tsarina who was “devoid of all charm”
-Loss of morale: 3 guns per two soldiers, 34,000 desertions monthly
