What is the definition of stress?
psychological & physical response to a stimulus (stressor) that alters your equilibrium (balance)
What is equilibrium?
homeostasis: maintaining a steady state in which my body functions best
What is the definition of distress?
distracting (high stress)
-focuses on effects of stress
What is an example of distress?
test taking you focus on consequence of a test grade instead of the test itself
What is the definition of eustress?
useful (low stress)
What is an example of eustress?
need some stress to get yourself to study, to run from an oncoming car, to gear up for athletic event
What is an example of distress vs. Eustress?
a defending champion is fan favorite puts a lot of pressure on themselves (experiences distress which affects performance)
underdog not much expectations, nothing to loose, can enjoy and just focus on (he experiences eustress, ehancing performance)
What are some psychological symptoms of stress?

the stimulus that alters your equilibrium
Why is perception of a stressor so important?
bcs you must SEE a stimulus/event as stressor In order to experience stress
What is an example of importance of perception (of a stressor)?
california fires = Irene experienced high levels of stress because daughter/grandson were very close & were affected
What is another example of importance of perception (of a stressor)?
2 students view on getting a “C” on an exam
freshman: may be pre-something so focused on good grades
seniors: ready to graduate/don’t care as much
What are common stressors among college students?
- classes: exams, grades, studying
- time management
- romantic relationships

What is an example of an acute stressor?
- running late to a quiz, taking the quiz
- zebra: being chased by a hungry lion
lion: chase zebra or hunger
What is an example of a chronic stressor?
- 4 years of classes and concerns
- zebra&lion: years of drought/disease/predators
Definition of anticipatory stress?
stress: looking ahead to future demands & stressors
