Q

Features of a Laboratory Experiment. (5)

A
  1. Lab experiments are conducted in a tightly controlled, artificial environment.
  2. The experimenter deliberately manipulates the independent variable.
  3. The experimenter measures the dependent variable (this produces quantitative data)
  4. There is an attempt to control/minimise other (extraneous) variables which could affect the DV/results.
  5. The experimenter uses standardised procedures (including instructions)

Features of Field experiments. (4)

A
  1. Field experiments are conducted in a natural, ‘real world’ environment.
  2. The experimenter deliberately manipulates the independent variable.
  3. The experimenter measures the dependent variable.
  4. There is minimal (if any) control of other (extraneous) variables which could affect the DV/results.

Q

Features of Natural & Quasi Experiments (6)

A
  1. Can be conducted in any setting.
  2. The IV is not manipulated but instead is ‘naturally occuring’.
  3. Quasi: The IV is a pre-existing characteristic (a difference between people that already exists)
  4. Natural: The IV is an event/experience.
  5. The experimenter measures the dependent variable.
  6. The experimenter has very little/no control over other (extraneous variables which could affect the DV/results.
