Features Of The Periphral Circulation Flashcards
What is the definition of capcitance?
This is effectively the same as compliance, involving the relative volume per unit increase in pressure
What is the cardiac output?
The stroke volme x the heart rate
What is the effect of compliance on blood flow?
Compliance acts to store the mechanical energy of the pressure wave that is produced during systole
How is the pressure wave smoothed during systole?
The aorta and the elastic arteries witness smooth muscles contraction in order to smooth our the pressure wave
What is the windhessel effect?
Where elastic atreries recoil during diastole and release energy smoothing flow through the arterioles
What are some of the factors effecting the systlolic and the diastolic pressure?
The PR, the compliance of the elastic ateries, the cardiac output, and the arterial compliance.
What is the pulse pressure?
Difference between the systolic and diastolic healthy BP.
How do you calculate the average pressure of the blood?
Diastolic + 1/3 of the pulse pressure
How do arterioles match the substrate and the metabolic demand?
By using vasoconstriction and vasodilation
Why do we have a high vasomotor tone at rest?
No need to employ a large functional resever, and modest metabolic demands only need low blood flow, and increased SNS activity drives the a1 GPCRs contraction which leads to high vasocontriction
What are some of the local factors that can reduce the vasomotor tone?
Active tissues produce vasodilating metabolites, but the increased blood flow dilutes these and affects the overall vasomotor tone, and endothelial factor are released from the local endothelium to modulate the vasomotor tone.
What is the definition of compliance?
The ability to distend and increase volume due to a pressure increase
