Discourse
Any spoken or written language that is longer than a sentence
Utterance
A section of spoken language which is often preceded by silence and followed by silence or change of speaker
Body Language
Communication using non-verbal gestures
Turn-Taking
When one person speaks at a time and the others wait until the other person is done before they speak
Adjacency pairs
Dialogue with one pattern, one person talks about something and the other talks about that thing as a response
Conversational Floor
When a person has the lead/control in the current conversation
Status
The perceived position of a person’s authority
Clashing
When two or more people speak at the same time
Repairing
The speaker analyzing their own text or speech and making a correction e.g. “What I meant to say was…”
Topic Shift
The change of Topic in a Conversation
Conversation Endings
Closing a conversation with standard phrases such as “see you later” or “bye”
Tone
The tone of speech, whether it is formal or informal (colloquial language)
Pitch
How high or low the voice is
Volume
Level of voice Production
Speed
How fast the speaker is speaking, (slow, fast, relaxed)
