(Fe)male Anatomy and the Pathway of Sperm/Egg Flashcards
Prostate gland
Protects sperm by also creating fluid, pushes fluid to urethra
Seminal vesicle
Produces fluid for the semen to move
Urethra
Transports urine
Testicle
Produces sperm and testosterone
Scrotum
Protects the testes and keeps them cool
Penis
Used for sexual interaction
What is the sperm’s path?
- Testes produce sperm
- Sperm travels up the vas deferens
- Travels to seminal vesicle
- Goes to prostate gland
- Exits the urethra
How long can sperm travel after conception?
1~7 days
Vas deferens
Brings sperm to seminal vesicle
Ovary
Holds eggs or ova
Fallopian tubes
Transports egg to uterus
Uterus
Thick pear shaped area where the fetus grows
Cervix
The neck of the uterus that can widen to 10 cm
Vagina
Used for sexual intercourse and child birth
What is the path of the egg?
- Ovary
- Fallopian tube
- Uterus
- Cervix
- Vagina
Menstruation days 1-5
Blood rich lining of the uterus leaves the body through the vagina
Menstruation days 6-13
Egg cell in ovary ripens. Lining of uterus thickens and prepares to possibly receive a fertilized egg.
Menstruation day 14
Egg is released from ovary to Fallopian tube.
Menstruation days 15-28
Egg travels through Fallopian tube and attaches to inner lining of uterus. If not fertilized it sheds and leaves as blood.
