Fat as a metabolic fuel - P notes Flashcards

Q

Describe the steps involved in Carnitine Transport

A

Cytoplasm: Fatty Acyl CoA Synthetase synthesises the conversion of Fatty Acid to Fatty Acyl-CoA
Fatty Acyl-CoA = able to pass into the mitochindrial membrane
Carnitine Acyltransferase-1 = synthesises the conversion of Fatty Acyl-CoA to Fatty Acyl-Carnitine
CAT-1 = inhibited by Malonyl CoA which is produced in FA Synthesis
Reason - if making FA then why would you want to be oxidising it!!
Fatty Acyl-Carnitine = able to move into the mitochondria
CAT-2 (Carnitine Acyltransferase-2) = synthesises the conversion of Fatty Acyl-Carnitine into Fatty Acyl-CoA and Carnitine
So purpose of carnitine transport = get Fatty Acyl-CoA into the cell
