FastTrack Topic 3 Flashcards

Q

How does a Dyson work?

A

Air comes into chamber via main hose
Air is made to spin round the main chamber at a fast speed
This speed creates centrifugal force which causes particles to get heaver and spin to the outside for collection.
Any air remaining will only have small dust remaining.

Q

What is the difference between Diesel and Petrol engines?

A

Petrol-
Air and fuel mixed by carburettor is injected into the cylinder.
Here it is ignited by a spark plug housed in the cylinder head.
This compustion fires the piston downwards.
Diesel-
Air is brought into the chamber via the vacuum created by the piston moving from TDC to BDC.
Compression volume means air temperature is hot enough when piston rises to not need spark plug.
Diesel injected in atomised form at end of compression stroke.

Q

Turbo charged vs super charged

A

Both are basic compressors however they take motion from different parts of the engine.
Turbo takes motion from exhaust gases
Supercharged takes motion from the engines crankshaft
These compress air and force it into the engine via centrifugal force which aids in combustion.
