Yarns put on the loom first
Wrap
a line with an arrowhead at each end, which extends from one end of a pattern piece to its opposite edge
Grain Line
Yarns woven over and under the wrap yarn (filling)
Weft
Finished edges parallel with the warp yarn
Selvage
When a pattern piece is positioned on the fabric so that the grain line is at a 45 degree angle from wrap and weft
Bias
Amount of difference between the body measurements of the intended wearer and the measurements of the finished garment
Ease
Changing the size of the basic pattern, scaling it up and down the size range of the garment
Grading
The wrap and weft threads are not perpendicular to each other
Off-Grain
Finishing a raw edge of a garment; A narrow strip along the edge
Facing
Additional layer of stiffing fabric added to increase body stability and strength
Interfacing
A lightweight fabric, cut the same as the garment it provides better wear better hang and better appearance in garment (hangs inside the garment)
Lining
Duplicate of a garment piece,usually cut out of lightweight fabric
Underlining
V shape or clip marking the edge of a pattern piece to indicate which seam match/difference between front and back
Notch
Location on pattern piece where stitching should occur in order to insure proper size and shape
Seam Line
Uniform area added beyond the seam line on a pattern piece to allow sewing without changing the desired size.
Seam Allowance
Reverse stitch on the machine to sew backward and forward in the same place
Backstitch
Plain woven cotton fabric
Muslin
Used to take up excess fabric used to fit the garment over the body’s curves
Darts
The feel of the fabric
Hand
Small supplies needed to make a garment (ex thread, needles)
Notions
To turn a square corner by leaving the needle in fabric turning material being stitched in another direction
Pivot
Holds fabric steady while the needle is stitching
Presser Foot
The cut edge of the garment pieces
Raw edge
To strengthen an area that will be subject to strain
Reinforce
Sewing a straight stitch in the seam
Stitch in the Ditch
Lines one point of a garment to another point (ex. Shoulder princess seam from shoulder to waist)
Style line
Relationship between needle and bobbin threads creating a looser or tighter stitch
Tension
A surface produced by brushing up fibers on the fabrics during finishing process
Nap
The fitted upper portion of a blouse, pants, pants or skirt
