Fashion Descriptors Flashcards
Funky
Fun hems, fabrics and colors. This goes great with eclectic style.
Statement
A statement piece adds eye catching color, design, or alternate style that shows confidence when they wear it.
Mini Skirt
Short skirt that goes a few inches below the pelvis and buttocks.
Thigh High
Falls mid thigh.
Knee Length
Falls at the knees
Calf Length
Falls at the calves.
Accent Piece
An accent piece is a splash of color in a garment that draws attention and/ or ties items together. Noting what is an accent piece gives me an idea on what object to throw in a splash of color.
Maxi Dress
A maxi dress is a floor or ankle length informal dress. Maxi dresses are formfitting at the top and loose flowing at the bottom, cut to flow over the body.
MIDI Dress
A “midi” is used to refer to any dress or skirt that has a hem which hits at mid-calf – halfway between the knee and ankle.
Pleated
A pleat is a type of fold formed by doubling fabric back upon itself and securing it in place. Shirts, pants, dresses, skirts, and sleeves can all be pleated.
Plain
Not decorated or elaborate; simple or ordinary in character.
Cheetah Print
A pattern or print resembling the coat of a cheetah. It may incorporate other patterns, shapes or solids.
Zebra print
A pattern or print resembling the coat of a zebra. It may incorporate other patterns, shapes or solids.
Animal Print
A pattern or print resembling the coats of animals. It may incorporate other patterns, shapes or solids or be of animals itself. In most cases specify what animal they are looking for
Snakeskin
A pattern or print resembling the skin of a snake. It may incorporate other patterns, shapes or solids.
Striped
Vertical, horizontal or diagonal. Some women look good in stripes, if you don’t know the direction they look good in I will be able to identify it based off their body measurements and photo.
Tropical Print
Tropical prints can be anything from flowers to plants, fruits or animals. The definition is that they all can be found in tropical environments.
Fluffy
Means having body to it from the use of fabric and stitching.
Soft
Refers to color transitions in the print of the fabric, and the feel of the garment.
Retro Print
Print from the 60’s or 70’s. It can also refer to style of time periods not trending right now.
Two toned
Two toned means two different fabrics of similar color, and/or two different colored fabrics used in a garment in two segments. Often it is vertical panels or horizontal panels of fabric.
Tye dye
A process of twisting and manipulating the fabric and dyeing it with multiple colors.
Abstract Print
The print can be anything really. I select it based off their style profile. It can be shapes, art work, places, and designs. Use this if you know someone really likes this style and you can pinpoint a these to be “abstracted”
Geometric Pattern Print
A motif, pattern, or design depicting abstract, nonrepresentational shapes such as lines, circles, ellipses, triangles, rectangles, and polygons.
Faux Leather
Synthetic leather that can used on all types of garments.
Studded
Decorated or augmented with studs. Jeans, pants, jackets, and sometimes dresses and tops.
Rhinestoned
An imitation crystal used in costume jewelry and to decorate clothes. I love using these on jean and jacket buttons, and more!
Strappy
Eye catching straps. These can be over the shoulders, the front of the garment, or the back of the garment.
Spaghetti Straps
A thin shoulder strap on an item of women’s clothing. I don’t purchase these types of garments for women with large breasts unless specifically requested.
Laced Up
Being enclosed or tightened by a lattice of ribbon or string.
Sheer
See-through clothing is any garment of clothing made with lace, mesh or sheer fabric that allows the wearer’s body or undergarments to be seen through its fabric
Mesh
Mesh is loosely woven or knitted fabric that has many closely spaced holes. It can also mean fabric where “holes” are placed in the garment in a decorative manner.
MIDI Dress
The term “midi” applies to any length from two inches below the knees to just above the ankles. The easiest lengths for most women are just above the swell of the calf (a couple of inches below the knees) or just below the calves (so that a few inches of ankle show).
Bandeau Dress
A garment that wraps around a woman’s breasts.
Slit
Narrow vertical opening at either the back, side or front of the garment.
Tulle
A lightweight, very fine, stiff netting. It can be made of various fibers, including silk, nylon, polyester and rayon.
Flowy

Gingham
Gingham is usually a two-color pattern, and popular combinations are red and white gingham or blue and white gingham
Bow Knot
Traditionally it is worn around the neck. A bow knot is used to tie parts of a garment together for decoration or support.
Plush
Fabric that feels rich and full.
Bandage Top
Top that appears to be made from multiple thin strips of cloth sewn together, with the individual strips shaped like bandages.
Sparkles
Describing a top that is bedazzled in some way to add sparkles. This can be a sequined top or rhinestone studded top.
Corset Top
A top that is similar to a corset.
Office
Office wear is more structured, classic, and looser fitting clothing.
Cropped Top
A top that is cropped to show the navel or abdomen.
Sweats
Everyone likes a good sweatshirt. Sweatsshirts and pants have a crew neck or v-neck and thick knitted cuffs.
Sheen
Produces a slight reflection in the fabric.
Matte
Doesn’t reflect light much at all.
Natural
Natural is a style that is reminds us of the earth. It is often of woven fabric of neutral colors, and loosely fitted.
Tweed
A woolen fabric, of a soft, open, flexible texture, resembling cheviot or homespun, but more closely woven. It can be soft or rough in texture.
Lounging
Lounging wear is a a relaxed type of clothing that could be worn anywhere but is best suited for the house.
Fringe
A border or edge of hanging threads, cords, or strips, and was often found on garments made from suede, leather, and buckskin.
Contrasting
Refers to the arrangement of opposite elements. It can be contrasting styles, contrasting fabrics, or contrasting colors.
Bohemian
Is a fashion style strongly related to hippie fashion, in which natural fabrics, retro patterns, neutrals and warm shades merge with 70s style. It often pulls from international influences.
Ombre
A french term meaning shaded, usually a multicolored stripe that gradually fades from dark to light
Sporty
Giving the appearance of actively playing in a sport or on a sports team. Clothing like track suits, and sports gear. We don’t work with any sports team attire.
Beachy
Breezy light-weight apparel often with the use of natural and sunset colors, clothing well worn, and easy to take off.
Elegant
The quality of being graceful and stylish in appearance and manner; the quality of being pleasingly ingenious and simple.
Relaxed
somewhat loose-fitting and usually casual in style.
Belted
Belts can go on waists of apparel, and cuffs of jackets and coats.
Sleek
Sleek can be a look describing them as being well polished and put together. It also can describe a garments fabric as easily molding to the body and hard to grab when you touch it.
Fitted
Meant to show structure of an Princess Cut figure.
Extravagant
Goes over the top with motifs, frills, and fabric to make a statement.
Silky
Smooth and soft to the touch.
Faux Fur
Fabric that resembles fir
Woven
A type of noticeable detail where the fibers intersect like a checkerboard.
Faded
Having the effect of loosing the fabrics brightness.
Vintage
Vintage is often referred to a previously worn. Bliss and Bles Apparel™ doesn’t use any previously worn apparel, but I do purchase items that are in a vintage style.
Velvet
Velvet is a form of textile that is woven on a special loom. It is a tufted fabric in which the cut threads are very evenly distributed, giving it its distinct feel. Two fabrics are woven together with the velvet and then cut apart giving velvet its distinct feel.
Stone Washed
Being washed with rough stones to give it the appearance of aged and worn. This process is often done with different technologies these days.
Stitched
Noticeable stitching on hems and as decorations on tops and dresses.
Tassels
Hanging cords on a garment. Tassels can be all over the garment or just as a feature on parts of the garment.
Billowy
Fabric that moves, or fabric that is layered in a way to add volume to an area
Puffy
Thick appearance.
Knitted
Referring to a sweater, blouse or dress that has a noticeable knit to it.
Chunky
Refers to a Chunky knit sweater.
Polkadots
Repeating dot pattern on garment. polkadots can be more than dots! Sometimes I find hearts or other shapes
Embroidered
Is the skilled technique of embellishing and decorating a garment by hand (or machine), using stitches in silks and yarns and sometimes including sequins, beads, feathers and pearls.
Applique
A sewing technique in which fabric patches are layered on a foundation fabric, then stitched in place by hand or machine.
Bell Sleeves
Like bell bottoms the bell starts at the joint of the body,
Lace
Lace is a fine, openwork fabric, typically created from cotton, line, silk or metallic threads to make net mesh patterned work. It’s usually found on collars and edges of sleeves.
Embellishment
An embellishment is anything that adds design interest to the article of clothes being developed. It is something added beyond construction of the garment.
Ruffle
A decorative frill of lace or gathered ornamentation of fabric, often used to trim or embellish the wrist or neck.
Gigot Sleeve
formed from a voluminous gathering of fabric at the upper arm that tapers to a tight fit from the elbow to the wrist.
Frilly
A strip of frilled or closely pleated fabric used for trimming or decoration. Frilly refers to lots of frills.
Asymmetrical neckline
Any neckline that looks different on either side of the center front of the top or dress.
Asymmetrical hem
Cut longer on one side than the other, rather than being cut straight across. Another type of asymmetrical hem is a high-low hem, which is cut higher in the front than the back.
Off the Shoulder
This can mean it falls off the shoulder or is constructed to be off the shoulder(s)
Mock Turtleneck
A collar that rises up the nape of the neck. It is never as tall as turtleneck.
Floral
Floral print arranged in an eye catching manner. It can be used on all types of Bliss and Bles apparel except, tank tops, tshirts, camisoles, and Moto jackets.
In fashion print means many things, but as a stylist you will you use it when they want a a decorative t-shirt with a type of graphic.
Paisley
An ornamental design which consists of curved teardrop shapes.
Cropped Tshirt
Tshirt cut to expose navel or abdomen.
Cropped Blouse
A blouse that ends around the waist. It can be flared, straight or form fitting.
One Shouldered
Garment designed to go over one shoulder only. It is also considered an asymmetrical top.
Ruched
A gathered overlay of fabric strips that are pleated, fluted, or gathered together to create a ripple-like effect. This technique can be very basic and simple too on shoulders of tops and dresses. Your drawings will help me decide!
Haltered
A clothing strap that runs from the front of the garment around the back of the neck, generally leaving the upper back uncovered. It can be two pieces that tie in the back as opposed to one connected piece.
Structured
Sewn together in a way that gives it shape!
Dramatic
Striking appearance or flamboyant color and design.
Plunging Neckline
A dress or blouse with a plunging neckline is cut in a very low V-shape at the front
Collared
Having a collar of some type.
Padded Shoulder
Padded shoulders go great on bodys with narrow shoulders or Emerald cut body shapes.
Structured Shoulder
Sewn together in a way that gives it shape! There are many possibilities for me select from when you write in this one!
Sweater Dress
A dress made of sweater material. It can resemble a sweater or be more a knitted dress.
Beaded
Beads are added by machine or hand. They may be all over, or just on places like the collar.
Bishop Sleeve
A bishop sleeve is a long sleeve that is gathered at the bottom with a button cuff, slit and facing.
Sequin
A small, shiny, disc-shaped bead used for decorative purposes. In earlier centuries, they were made from shiny metals. An entire garment can be sequined or just part of it. A garment can also be mad fro a sequin fabric.
Graphic
The graphic design style is synonymous with informal shapes, rich and high contrasting colour use, hand drawn and coloured illustrations, space-age forms and dramatic curves. Some women will look good in graphic tshirts, especially the Brilliant Cut Shape. Use a few other describing words to help me narrow in on a graphic for your client!
Button Front
A button facing and holes on a garment that is either decorative or functional.
Drawstring Waist - A waist that is drawn together with a drawstring, ribbon, or fabric ribbon in a drawstring manner.
Plaid
Elaborate multi colored checkerboard fabric design.
Ripped
Torn intentionally to create a look of distress, high use, or age.
Frayed
Frayed intentionally to create a look of distress, high use, or age.
Solid
Of a continual unaltering color.
Chic
Conveys smart, elegant and sophisticated.
Crocheted
Crochet is a process of creating textiles by using a crochet hook to interlock loops of yarn, thread, or strands of other materials.

Simple, not lots of detail or seams.

Classic
The Classic Style Type is safe, clean and traditional. You know what works for you and you tend to stick with it. You value longevity over trends and most likely have established somewhat of a fashion uniform, a trusted look that is both timeless and flattering with a smart flair.
Cargo
Apparel designed for tough outdoor activities or having a look of many pockets. Cargo can be a pant or a jacket.

Androgynous
When the same piece of clothing is worn by both men and women, it is gender-neutral or unisex.
Feminine
Most of the apparel I select is feminine or pertaining to a woman or girl. This is a more womanly style and is a descriptor when describing wardrobes that are dramatic, classic, sporty, and eclectic.
Masculine
Clothing styles that uphold traditional male values (think authoritative suits, sports-loving athletic gear and gender sanctioned pants). Some women like to be seen in this manner so make sure to specify with this descriptor.
Paperbag Waist
This style cinches and gathers the fabric right above the hips. There is extra fabric above it. It adds definition to narrower hips and creates waistlines.
