Farming practices and production Flashcards
What is a food chain?
Simple lines of energy transfer. Each stage is called a trophic level
What is a food web?
Shows lots of food chains in an ecosystem and how they overlap
What is a decomposer?
Part of the food web. An organism that breaks down dead or undigested material allowing nutrients to be reduced
What is a prodcuer?
An organism that makes their own food
What is the aim of farming practices?
To increase the amount of energy available for human consumption
Name 2 farming practices that increase the amount of energy available
Simplifying food webs
Reducing respiratory losses
How does simplifying food web increase the amount of energy?
It gets rid of pests by using chemical pesticides, biological agents or integrated systems. This reduces energy loses and increases the NPP of a crop
How does reducing respiratory losses increase the amount of energy?
Farmers can control the living conditions of their animals. This means that energy is transferred more efficiently.
