Fanon Flashcards
What are the basic features of colonialism?
1) rule by force (no hegemony - that is coordination of ends or winning consent) 2) bifurcated civil society; material correlation between race, class 3) race/class correlation made possible by racial ideology
What are the benefits of violent revolution?
1) production of unity 2) cleanses burden of inferiority/builds understanding of participants’ importance 3) “activation”/accountability
What is the balance of forces within colonial society?
Urban (reactionary) sphere: national bourgeoisie, proletariat Rural (revolutionary): peasants On the fence: tribal leaders and importantly the lumpenproletariat, who have most revolutionary potential but may go other way
What is the National Bourgeois Road to decolonization?
Moves from a culture of racism, to a weakly developed bourgeois class and results in dictatorship.
What is the National Liberation Road to decolonization?
Begins with people’s self-governance, moves toward collective ownership and planning and this provokes a Gramscian transformation towards national unity (=/= nationalism).
What does revolution look like in a colonial setting?
A war of movement, much like Lenin advocated. But for Fanon, the violence of the WoM produces a simultaneous war of position, i.e. class formation.
