HOUSEHOLDS
A
one person living alone or a group of people (not necessarily related) living at the same address, can consist of a single, more than one, or no families.

A
married, civil partnered, or cohabiting couple with or without children, or a lone parent with at least one child who lives at the same address.

NUCLEAR FAMILY
- traditional family

- two generations (parents + children)
- always 2 parents when traditional

- usually headed by a lone female
- consequence of divorce, death of spouse, having illegitimate children etc

- traditionally geographically static

- close knit , dependant
- attenuated extended family : moved away but maintain regular contact

- result of divorce forming new relationships with new families (i.e step - families)
- also a nuclear family - ROBERT CHESTER included these family types in his ‘neo-conventional’ families

- nuclear families (parents still together)
- living apart - usually due to employment

- children have grown up and left family home may result in a ‘boomerang family’

- common with ethnic minority communities + other societies

- emotional ties between adults are gone

- instrumental; earning/providing/decisions
- expressive; caring/domestic tasks

- people have fewer children and often later in life
