Changing patterns of divorce
Since the 1960 great increase divorce in the uk due to changes in law
Explanations for divorce- before 1857
- changes in law
- divorce was very difficult to obtain in the 19th century especially for women
- before 1857 divorce was virtually non existent, men could divorce unfaithful wives but women had to prove husbands matrimonial offence

- Equalising the grounds for divorce between sex

Note their has been a rapid decline on the stigma attached to divorce - divorce is now seen as more of a misfortune
New right/ feminism
- new right see divorce as undesirable- undermining marriage and breaking the traditional nuclear family which they regard as social stability
- feminists see divorce as desirable because it shows women are beaming free
Rising expectations of marriage-fletcher
Argued that higher expectations people place on marriage are a major cause of rising divorce rates- people are less willing to tolerate unhappy marriage

- less people are getting married

- less people are getting married in a church
- declining stigma of alternatives to marriage- cohabitation
Same sex relationships -weeks
- in 2013 same sex marriages & civil partnerships became legal in England
- weeks- sees gays as creating families based on friendship he describes these as the ‘chosen families’- they offer the same security & stability as heterosexual couples

- particular type of extended family which brannen describes as long and thin
- extends vertically through three or more generations -grandparents, parents & children
- doesn’t extent horizontally - doesn’t include aunts, uncles, cousins etc
Education safeguarding
All children have to be protected by the safeguarding act in skl
Conservative government
Gave illegitimate children- child born outside of marriage- tried to give the same rights to children even tho their parents aren’t married

First of parliament acts to create education compulsory
