● Identifies days 8 to 19 of a woman’s cycle as the
fertile days
● Uses a necklace to identify the fertile and infertile
days
● Can be used by women with regular menstrual
cycle ranging from 26 to 32 days
● Cannot be used by women with very short (< 26
days) or long (> 32 days) menstrual cycles.
Standard Days Method
● Entails observing the changes in the cervical
mucus secretion during the menstrual cycle
● Spinnbarkeit Test - mucus stretching
Cervical Mucus/Billings Method
● Identifies the fertile and infertile period of a
woman’s cycle by daily taking and recording of the
rise in body temperature during and after ovulation
● BTT - the temperature of the body at rest after at
least 3 hours of continuous sleep before
temperature taking
Basal Body Temperature Method
● Combined measurement of BBT and observation of the cervical mucus with other fertility symptoms
Sympto-Thermal Method
● Based upon the principle of natural infertility
experienced by the BF women
○ Delayed ovulation
○ Delayed menstruation
● 98% effective if fully breastfeeding within 6
months postpartum
CRITERIA FOR USE
● Baby is less than 6 months old.
● BF mother.
● Mother is not menstruating.
Lactational Amenorrhea Method (LAM)
● Types:
○ Combined Oral Contraceptive Pills (COCP)
- Estrogen + Progesterone
- For non BF mothers
○ Progestin-only Pills
- Progesterone only
- For BF mothers
Oral Contraceptive Pills
● A steroidal hormone resembling the female
hormone called progesterone.
● It is injected intramuscularly deep into the upper
outer quadrant of the buttock or the deltoid area of
the arm.
● It is 99% effective
Progestin-only Injectables
● Progestin-only implants inserted under the skin
in the woman’s upper arm or forearm through a
minor surgical procedure under local anesthesia,
which releases progestin at a controlled rate

Subdermal Implants
● Non-medicated IUD: Lippes loop
● Medicated IUDs: Copper T380-A and Levonorgestrel (LNG20)
● Prevents fertilization
● Inhibits sperm migration in the upper female
genital tract
● Inhibits ovum transport and fertilization
Intrauterine Devices (IUD)
● Thin rubber sheath worn on erected penis
● A thin sheath (polyurethane plastic), (7-8 cm in
diameter and 17 cm long).
Male Condom and Female Condom
● Tying, cutting or blocking the fallopian tube
● 10-15 min operation
● Ovum is trapped out of the fallopian tube
Bilateral Tubal Ligation
● Blocking/tying or cutting of the vas deferens
● 15-30 ejaculation thereafter to achieve a zero
sperm count
● 99.9% effective
