What is a household?
A household is a person living alone or a group of people living together.
What is a beanpole family?
A beanpole family is a multi generational extended family e.g. 4 generations with few children.
What is the definition of birth rate?
Birth rate is the number of babies per 1000 per year.
What is a civil partnership?
A legally recognised union of a man and a woman in a committed relationship.
What is cohabitation?
Cohabitation is when 2 people are living together in the same household in an intimate/ committed relationship without being officially married.
What is individualisation?
Individualisation is the process where traditional norms and values weaken and individuals feel free to make life choices e.g. secularisation.
What is the instrumental role?
The provider / breadwinner role which involves going out to work and earning money for the family.
What are gender roles?
The social positions and occupations we associate with men and women.
What is globalisation?
Globalisation is the increasing interconnectedness of societies across the globe.
What is an ideological function?
This term refers to the ways institutions spread ideas in society through dominant groups e.g. ISA- Althusser.
What is an extended family?
Family that goes beyond the traditional nuclear family including grandparents and cousins.
What are gender norms?
Gender norms are the ‘expected’ patterns of behaviour associated with masculinity and femininity.
What are economic factors?
This term refers to things to do with money e.g. the amount of wealth / income a family or individuals have.
What is emotion work?
This is how individuals act in ways that would be of emotional benefit to others.
What is the definition of death rate?
The number of deaths per 1000 of the population per year.
