Family Harm
A broader, more holistic view of the issues occurring within families and the ensuing detrimental effects.
Family Violence
A subset of family harm which includes physical, sexual or psychological abuse within domestic relationships.
Incident
Distinct or definite event with a beginning and an end.
Episode
Part of a series of events, which are part of a cumulative pattern.
Protection Order (PO)
Court ordered for the safety of a victim (including their children), either on application or sentence on a family violence charge.
Police Safety Order (PSO)
Immediate order issued by Police where concerns remain for the safety of a person at a family harm episode.
Family Harm Investigation
The investigation that takes place when Police are dispatched (or attend) a family harm episode.
Domestic Relationship
Is a partner, a family member, ordinarily shares a household or has a close personal relationship with the other person.
Mutual Participant
Describes the role where no offence has occurred, no history of family harm and you cannot establish a pattern of coercive and controlling behaviour. Both have equal participation.
Person at Risk
Person deemed to be most at risk of being harmed once officers leave the scene.
Dynamic Assessment
Questions asked if the person at risk about a person posing risk, designed to gauge concerns for safety.
Offender
A person who has been charged with or convicted of a family violence offence.
CYPeFH
A child or young person present at a family harm episode, whether they witnessed it or not.
Predominant Aggressor
The person displaying the most significant pattern of violence through exercising coercive control in the history of a relationship.
Primary Victim
The person where history shows is experiencing coercive and controlling behaviours from a family member or intimate partner.
