What is an example of generational diversity?

A

Family life and being young in 1930s was very different to the 1980s which is very different to 2012 -

1980s was a time of mass unemployment - making it hard to get a job you would therefore stay in education longer and live with parents a greater length of time

A

Families are
Varied in structure and form
Constantly changing
Have no set structure that is regarded as ideal

Post modernist statements on diversity are exaggerated and that basic features of family life are modelled on the heterosexual nuclear family have largely unchanged for the majority of the population since 1950!

He argues it is important not to dismiss the nuclear unit as irrelevant

Q

In conclusion what is the view of the family ?

A

Nuclear families are still very common but increasing numbers of other family types do indicate a slow and steady drift away from the nuclear ideal - demographics point out that family life is a constant state of change and flux not static
