What is cultural competence?
Responding respectfully and effectively to people of all cultures, languages, ethnic backgrounds, disabilities, religions, sexual orientation, and other diversity factors
What is ethnicity?
Share ancestry and are differentiated by their customs, characteristics, language, etc. and have their own family structures, food preferences, moral codes, and health care practices

Intimate Partner Violence
Any physical, sexual, or emotional abuse in the home environment. Children are often witnesses of this abuse and/or are abused themselves
* Pregnancy is often a time when physical abuse starts or escalates
The Cycle of Violence
- Tension-Building
- Honeymoon
- Acute or Abusive
Stage 1 Tension-Building
- Verbal or minor battery
- Victim tries to calm the abuser
Stage 2 Acute or Abusive
- No triggers needed
- Uncontrollable discharge of tension
Stage 3 Honeymoon
- Abuser acts loving and kind but makes victim feel responsible
Violence Screening Assessment
- Injuries
- Consequences of previous injuries
- Med/surg hx
- Mental health problems
- Frequent tranquilizer or sedative use
- Comments about a friend who has been abused
- STI’s or pelvic inflammatory disease
- Frequent visits for stress related disorders
- Partner’s behavior at the visit
Common injury areas related to violence
- Upper arms
- Face
- Breasts
- Abdomen
- Neck
Violence Interventions
- Isolate client immediately from family (if abuse is detected)
- Ask questions!
- Assess immediate safety
- Document and report findings
- Educate about community services
- Provide emotional support
- Offer a safety plan
What constitutes child abuse?
Any act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker that results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation, or an act or failure to act that presents an imminent risk of serious harm to a child
Short/Long term problems that abused children can suffer from
- Smoking
- Sexual activity
- Depression
- Drug use
- Suicide
- Low self-esteem
Protective factors to prevent short and long term problems related to abuse/neglect
- Establish or maintain feelings of connectedness/attachment to nonviolent caregiver
- Strong commitment to school
- Involvement in social activities
- Social and community support
- Positive siblings and peer relationship
- Ability to discuss problems with non-violent caregiver/adult
- Consistent presence of a parent/caregiver at least once a day
