What was Pope John Paul II’s ‘Theology of the Body’?
Pope John Paul II presented a view of the human body and the relationship between sexes that some peolple believe gives new insights into traditional Catholic thinking about sexual relationships.
Key features of Pope John Paul II’s theology of the body
God loves each and every human being for his or her own sake
God established marriage to bring two people together as a form of communion of persons
Both sexes have inherent dignity and value
The body and marital sex are good however extramarital sex and the use of contraception damage the significance and role of sex
Contrasting views to Pope John Paul II’s theology of the body
There are a wide variety of views about sexual relationships in British society today. Some are willing to casual sex with different partners
Many use contraception as they are not open to the creation of new life.
Extramarital
Occuring outside marriage, either before marriage or with someone other than your husband or wife
Catholic views on adultery
For Catholics, adultery breaks the commitment that is made in the marriage promises(vows). It is an act of betrayal that causes harm to the partner and potentially any children that they have.
Quote on adultery
Adultery is an injustice( Catechism of the Catholic Church)
Thou shalt not commit adultery - 10 commandments
Contrasting views on Adultery
Many non-catholics share the view that Adultery is wrong for very similar reasons to Catholics. However some people would argue that adultery could be forgiven under certain circumstances. An example would be in a very unhappy marriage where it seems to be the only way to change or improve the situation.
