Family and peers Flashcards
How does family influence addiction
Through the social learning theory as parents exert influence on their offspring as they are social models.
Reith and Dobbie 2011 also found that patterns of gambling were transmitted within families in gendered ways with males first experience of gambling being through their fathers and females through their mothers.
what peer influence say about addiction
Social networks can influence people.
AO3 Family influence:
Bahr et al 2005 found that the family characteristics that were mostly strongly associated with an increased prevalence of binge drinking, smoking and drug use were tolerant parental attitudes and sibling substance use. They also found that teenagers with parents who were tolerant of substance were more likely to interact with peers who smoked, dranked or used illicit drugs.
AO3 Family influence:
Slattin and Kerr 2000 suggests that lack of parental monitoring may result from teenagers disclosing too much information about their substance abuse to their parents. Parents inability to deal with this may lead them to stop monitoring offspring.
Peers AO3
Moreno et al 2010 studied the MySpace profiles of 400 17-20 year olds and found that 56% of these profiles contained references to alcohol.
Peer influence: Pitaken et al 2005 found that early onset of drinking was a significant risk factor for alcohol dependence in adulthood. Social norm intervention were developed to help address this idea this is based on the approach that that teenage behaviour is influenced by misperceptions of how peers think and act.
