Nuclear Family
Family that includes mother, father, and one or more natural chilldren
Single parent family
Includes one parent and one or more children; may be due to death, choice, or divorce
Extended family
Includes relatives in addition to parents and children possibly living in same home.

Includes parents with children from former marriages and children from remarriage
Adoptive families
Includes at least one child that is not biological who is legally adopted
Foster family
Includes at least on child that is not biological but lives with the family for an extended amount of time, no more than 1 year.

Dual Income Family
Both parents are working in a professional career and children have a nanny or caretaker.
Legal Guardian
An adult that cares legally is responsible for a child, usually a teenager.

The married couple establishes their home but not yet have children
Early Parental Years
From the birth of the first child until the child is 12 years old.
Late Parenting Years
When the oldest child is between the ages of 13 and 20
Launching
From the time the oldest child leaves the family for independent adult life till the time the last child leaves
Empty nest
From the time the children are gone till the marital couple retires
