Q

Deny thy father and refuse thy name,
Or, if thou wilt not, be but sworn my love,
And I’ll no longer be a Capulet.

A

Juliet struggles with the internal conflict between her feelings for Romeo and the knowledge that he is her enemy. She tries to separate Romeo from his identity as a Montague, and contemplates deserting her family for him. She does not see any way their love and their families’ opposition can be reconciled.

Q

And so, good Capulet, which name I tender
As dearly as my own, be satisfied.

A

When Tybalt challenges Romeo to a duel, Romeo refuses to fight because he’s secretly married to Tybalt’s cousin, Juliet. Here, it seems that Romeo’s love for his new wife and her family is now the most important thing to him.

Q

Hang thee, young baggage, disobedient wretch!
I tell thee what: get thee to church o’ Thursday,
Or never after look me in the face.

A

Despite being family, Capulet shows no mercy to his daughter for her disobedience. His own pride and outward appearance is shown to mean more than his family. If Juliet does not agree to his terms, she will no longer be part of the family.

Will you speak well of him that killed your cousin?
Will I speak ill of that is my husband?

A

Juliet is caught between the love for her family and her love for Romeo but ultimately she chooses Romeo. This perhaps shows family is not as important to her than it is for others
