What are roles of childern throught history?
- Contemporary: kids have now have a childhood and are in education for a longer time. Kids are also not expected to work.
- Past: Kids had to work to help the family. Kids were taken out of school sooner.
What are the 4 Parenting styles?
Auritative: High warm, High Control
Authoritarian: Low warm, High Control
Permissive: High warm, Low Control
Uninvolved: Low warm, Low Control
What are the Six Functions of the Family?
- Reproduction
- Physical care

What is “GIFT” for Parenting
- Go: Move and be active with your baby
- Inhale: When the baby is crying Inhale and exhale, calm down
- Feed: feed your baby but also yourself. Baby eats a little but frequently. You have to focus on yourself also because you are working hard.
- Touch: Touching your baby teaches your baby to value them self
What is Gottman’s “Four Horsemen”
- Criticism: criticizing your partner by attacking their character.
- Contempt: Disrespecting and mocking your partner
- Defensiveness: Trying to be the victim or make excuses so your partner feels guilty.
- Stonewalling: Avoiding interacting with your partner and the argument.
What is DUIK
- Dual-income family.
- Both parents have an income.
What is a Hunter-Gather family?
- Women essential to survival since they were child beares and this made them respected in social hierarchy.
- Informal group marriage
- Family: group of parents and their children
- kinship relationships ensure survival of all group members.
What is the Agricultural Families
- More work to be done therefore more children produced.
- Food was farmed, animals domesticated.
- Monogamy became the preference
- Farming became a family affair.
- Stayed with the family into adulthood.
What is Pre-Industrial Families
- Married for economic and social status
- Most couples (Monogamous) with fewer children (not much labor needed)
- No time for childhood (economic issues).
Children work at the age of 7 or 8 worked - Worked according to gender roles
what are Urban Industrial Families
- Industrial revolution
- Men started to work outside of the house produced by factories in the urban areas.
- Children no longer required to work and attend school
- families became smaller.
- Women were dependent on their husband’s salaries.
- Women taking care of children.
- Men financial supporters
What are Contemporary Canadian Families
- women working outside of home alongside men.
- Dual income families (DINK)
Divorce rates increased as divorce was easier to attain because women were independent because they can provide for themselves. - Increase in immigration (more diverse families).
- Same sex marriage becoming more prevalent.
- Counter culture, hippies and equality.
Functions of the family: Reproduction
Having kids. Growing population creates a better economy.
Functions of the family: Physical Care
Hardship occurs if these members receive no care unless society has alternatives. Covering basic needs shelter, food and clothing.
Functions of the family: Socialization
Socialize children by teaching them skills. Knowledge, values, and attitudes of their society.
