- reproduction - the family providing some stability for the reproduction and rearing of children
3- socialisation - the family is primarily geared towards primary socialisation, whereby children get taught the ideals that are socially acceptable

argues that the function of the family is
primary socialisation and personality stabilisation
primary socialisation
to teach children the norms and values of society and to prepare them for the world by teaching them basic skills
personality stabilisation
parents can relax at home when with family and release tensions and be refreshed when returning to work
Marxist feminism - perspectives on the family
argue that the main cause of women’s oppression in the family is capitalism, not men.
relates to the exploitation of the working class
how women reproduce the labour force
- unpaid domestic labour
- socialising the next generation of workers
- maintaining and servicing the current workers
women’s oppression within the family has 3 functions for capitalism
1- women reproduce the labour force
2- women absorb anger
3- women are a reserve army of cheap labour
how women absorb anger
- this anger would otherwise have been directed at capitalism
- Fran Ansley says wives are the takers of shit
how women are the reserve army of cheap labour
- women can be used when extra workers are needed
- when they are no longer needed they will be let go
- they will return to their primary role of unpaid domestic labour
