What is a family?
A group who are united by the ties of marriage, blood, or adoption, constituting in the same household
What is a nuclear family?
A family group consisting of parents and their children
What is a beanpole family?
A family whose living members come from many generations, but few in each generation
What is an extended family?
A family consisting of parents, their children and more extended relatives
What is a lobe parent family?
A family with only one parent
What is a symmetrical family?
A family in which the couple shares household tasks evenly
What is an empty nest family?
A family in which grown-up children have left home, leaving a couple living alone
What is a reconstituted family?
When two adults with children from previous relationships remarry (or cohabit) to form a new family
What is a same sex family?
A family headed by a same sex couple
What are cereal packet families and why are they called this?
Another term for nuclear families. This is because TV advertising and other media will heavily feature nuclear families as they are seen as ‘perfect’.
Define family diversity
All the different forms that families can take in society and how they are different to eachother
What is a commune?
A group living situation where people share everything. They were popular with American hippies in the 2960s
Define residential homes
Social work supervision for people who need more than just housing accommodation, such as elderly people, children in care, or adults with learning difficulties
