An important monument in the wasteland as it provides renewable electricity. Its also a major target for the Legion, making it the choke point against Legion invasion. The NCR fought off the legion in the first battle, with the game leading up to the second battle with your decisions changing the outcome.
Hoover Dam and the first Battle of Hoover Dam
In 2077, Every nuclear country engaged in mutually assured destruction, leading to the nuclear wasteland that makes up every Fallout game. The war lasted 2 hours.
The Great War
During the nuclear attacks, Mr. House was able to use a missile defense system to save part of Vegas. If he had the platinum chip, he would have been able to save the entire city.
Defense of New Vegas
The first Legate to serve Caesar, After the first loss of the Legion against the NCR, Caesar made an example out of his former general. He was set him on fire and thrown down the grand canyon, but survived.

This battle is what ends the first game, with the outcome changing depending on your actions and the fate of Vegas.

The wars that led to nuclear Armageddon as non renewable resources dwindled. It led to the US annexation of Canada and the war for Alaska between the US and China.
The Resource Wars
Theis device contained code that would have allowed for Mr. Houses defense network to save all of Vegas, but was lost. You finding it leads to the game beginning.
