Fallacies Example Flashcards
I think we should continue the Coronavirus restrictions. I know that some people don’t seem to care how many people die from COVID, but still it’s probably better to save lives, in my opinion.
Straw man Fallacy
I do not agree with Jackie’s skepticism about the new marketing strategy. Jackie is always skeptical— if we followed her advice we would literally never do anything new.
Ad Hominem Fallacy
We can either continue to live in the city, and tolerate all the inconveniences of urban life, or we can find a shack out in rural Kansas and resign ourselves to complete social isolation. It’s up to you.
False Dichotomy Fallacy
The last time I was in Pittsburg a cab driver cut me off, and my waiter was consistently late in bringing my drinks. People in Pittsburg are very inconsiderate.
Hasty Generalization Fallacy
From 1960 to 1990 violent crime in America increased by 80%. Over that same period, video games were invented and became very popular with large segments of population. Clearly video games are responsible for violent crime.
Faulty Causality (correlation implying casuation)
If I got the new management position, my boss would have invited me out to lunch today. It’s three o’clock and my boss hasn’t called. Nope, I didn’t get it.
Faulty Causality
If my wife Maria gets a raise, she’s committed to buying me a lawnmower. Whenever Maria buys something, she always uses it first. Well guess what? Maria just got her raise. Yep, I’m going to get to see what she looks like pushing a lawnmower.
Ad Hominem Argument Fallacy
Yesterday I rode the G train for the first time. Five minutes into the ride, the train was held in the tunnel for twenty minutes. The very next station I got off. No more riding the G train for me. It’s just going to make me late.
