Slippery Slope
The assumption that once started, a situation will continue to its most extreme possible outcome.
Hasty Generalization
Not enough evidence to support a particular conclusion
False Dilemma (Either/Or)
Speaker presents two extreme options as the only possible choices; Only offers two ways to view the issue and both are extreme and inaccurate
Ad Hominem
Switching argument from issue at hand to the character of the other speaker; Arguing against the person rather than addressing the issue; It’s valid to question a person’s character it it’s relevant to the topic at hand
Circular Reasoning
Repeating the claim as a way to provide evidence
Red Herring
Results from using evidence that’s irrelevant to the claim; When speaker skips to a new and irrelevant topic to avoid topic of discussion
Straw Man
When a speaker deliberately chooses a poor or oversimplified example to ridicule and refute an opponent’s viewpoint
Faulty Analogy
An analogy in which the two things are not comparable; focus on irrelevant and inconsequential similarities between two things
