argument from consequences?
Speaking for or against the truth of a statement because of the consequences it would have if true or false.
Straw man
to distort or to caricature a persons argument to make it easier to attack.
appeal to irrelevant authority
When someone uses somebodies authority as the sole reason to support their argument without providing other reasoning
Equivocation
calling 2 different things by the same name.
false dilemma
presenting only 2 outcomes or sides when more are available
not a cause for a cause
the conclusion that when events happen there must be evidence for those events when there isn’t
appeal to fear
rather than relying on solid evidence that something would happen. these arguments rely on fear.
hasty generalization
when a conclusion is formed when there is not enough information to accurately do so.
appeal to ignorance
assuming that because something isn’t proven to be false, then it is true
no true Scotsman
when someone is trying to defend their group from criticism by excluding those members who don’t agree with the group.
genetic fallacy
when an argument is either defended or devalued just because of its origins or the origins of the person making the claim.
guilt by association
the assumption that a person is guilty of something, not because of any evidence to prove they are guilty, but rather because they are associated with someone who is guilty.
affirming the consequent
frickin confusing
appeal to hypocrisy
saying that someones position is incorrect because they have done things that counter this position in the past.
Slippery slope
saying that because something is true that it will undoubtedly lead to a sequence of events.
