Triggers of Qing Collapse (1905-11)

- Cixi tried to introduce new reforms (tax increase)
- 1905 Anti-American Boycott organised (US introduces anti Chinese immigration laws)
- Puyi (2 years old) becomes Last Chinese Emperor with Prince Chun as regent
- Further reforms are introduced after 1908 (tax increase again)
- Tax revolts across China
- Qing attempts to nationalise the railways
- Railway Boom (1895-1911) had local owners wealthy (they became angry due to nationalisation)
- Government secured Western loan (upset anti-westerners)
- Sun exiled to Japan continued sponsoring inland uprisings through the Tongmenghui
- 10/10/1911 Wuchang military uprising
- Yuan Shikai got provinces back under control and negotiates Puyi’s abdication with his mother
