What does the problem of evil refer to?
The issue of how we suffer
What do most religions teach?
That God is all loving, cares about us and wants the best for us
What did David Hume (1711-1776) believe?
That the problem of evil shows that a God like this doesn’t exist, otherwise he would help us.
What can this issue be expressed as?
An inconsistent triad
What is a theodicy?
An attempt to defend or justify God in the face of evil by answering the problem of God being omnipresent.
What is the soul making theodicy?
That suffering is good for us to grow and learn and that it helps us truly appreciate things.
What is the free will defence?
that suffering will occur when we misuse our freewill to make bad decisions. If there weren’t consequences for our actions them they wouldn’t matter.
What is the Jewish concept of covenant?
the promise made to Abraham and his descendants that God would protect and bless his family and allow them a safe place to live.
What is the Jewish concept of Diaspora?
the idea that the Jewish people were scattered away from their homeland and forced to live in many different places due to persecution.
What is the Torah?
The Jewish Holy Book: it contains all the prayers and history of the Jewish people.
What is a Ghetto?
a run down and walled off area in a city that Jewish people were forced to live in.

all life involves suffering, human greed is the cause of suffering, there is an end to greed, this is the noble eightfold path

Right understanding. right thoughts, right speech, right action, right livelihood, right effort, right mindfulness, right concentration
