1857
DRED SCOTT vs. Sanford
US Supreme court rules that persons of African descent are not “citizens” and are not entitled to any rights whether slave or free.
1866
Civil Rights Act of 1866 is established, guaranteeing all property rights to all citizens regardless of race.
1868
14th amendment is Ratified, prohibiting state governmental discrimination… and the 15th amendment is interpreted to prevent racial discrimination by the federal gov’t.
What happens between the late 1800’s and the late 1900’s?
No real impact is made concerning PRIVATE discrimination.
November 1962
Pres. Kennedy signs Equal Opportunity in Housing executive order, prohibiting discrimination in housing owned, operated or assisted by federal gov’t. Preventing discrimination based on race, color, creed or national origin.
1964
Congress enacts Title VI of Civil Rights Act of 1964, prohibiting racial discrimination in programs receiving federal financial assistance.
1968
Congress enacts Fair Housing Act, banning discrimination on basis of race, color, religion or national origin in most housing transactions.
1974
The Fair Housing Act expands to prohibit discrimination on basis of gender. Section 8 Programs are created as well.
1988
Reagan Signs Fair Housing Amendments Act of 1988
