christianson and hubbinette interviewed real life witnesses to a bank robbery. some direct victims (high anxiety) and some bystanders (low anxiety). they found that more anxious victims were more accurate. real situation allows us to apply findings . suggests anxiety does not affect the accuracy of EWT and may actually enhance it
what evidence shows that the weapon focus effect limits the validity of anxiety as an influence on EWT?
Pickel tested weapon focus by conducted an experiment using scissors, a gun, a wallet or a raw chicken- eyewitness accuracy was poorer in ‘high unusualness’ condition e.g chicken rather then weapon. this may argue that participants react to ‘surprise’ rather than anxiety
how is most of the research on anxiety and EWT using field study designs a limitation?
not all variables can be controlled. such as post event discussion can be extraneous variable which researchers have no control over
