Factors That Influence Climate Flashcards
Distance from the coast
The sea is cooler than land in summer, and warmer in winter . So a sea breeze keeps the coast cool in summer and warm in winter!
Prevailing wind direction
For example in the UK the prevailing wind is from south west. It brings water vapour from the ocean and that means rain!
Ocean currents
For example a warm ocean current called the North Atlantic Prift warms the west coast of the UK in the winter , by warming the wind
Height above sea level/altitude
The higher you are above the sea level the cooler it is. The temperature falls by about 1 degrees every 100 metres
Shelter
One place may be warm and dry because it is sheltered by hills. Another may be exposed to wind and rain
How built up a place is
Roofs and streets store up heat. Cars and central heating give out heat. So the city tends to be warmer than the countryside
Latitude-the main factor
The further you go from the equator the Cooler it gets. That’s because the Earth is curved
