Factors That Cause Variation In Weather Flashcards
What are the 4 air masses?
Tropical Continental
Tropical Maritime
Polar Continental
Polar Maritime
Explain temperature in Altitude
Every 100m we lose 1 degrees. This is known as Lapse Rate.
Air becomes less dense and is less able to hold heat
Explain Precipitation in Altitude
Air arriving from Atlantic Ocean is forced to rise over high land in Wales
This creates relief rainfall as it cools and condenses
Explain the four air masses?
North East - cold air travelling over cold land. Weather is dry
South East - brings warmer temp as it arrived from warm land
South West - arrives from warm tropical area over the sea brings high temp
North West - arrives from cold polar regions with wet cold weather
Explain continentality - Summer
The sea takes longer to warm up and it keeps coastal areas cool
Explain continentality- Winter
Sea insulates area near the coast. Because absorbs heat slowly but retains it so costal areas are milder in winter
Give five things that affect the weather?
Altitude Air masses Continentality Aspect Latitude
Explain continentality - Precipitation
As moist air arrives it begins to rise, cool and condenses over the land.
Explain Aspect
South Facing receive direct sunlight.
North Facing remain shaded as the sun moves throughout the day
Explain Latitude
Equator - The sun is over head and its rays are concentrated over a smaller surface area.
Further North or South the sun rays are spread over greater area so less concentrated
