Factors that Affect Climate Flashcards
What is weather?
The condition of the atmoshpere at any given time. ( what you see out of your window)
What is climate?
Daily weather conditions of a place over a long period of time (weather averaged over a period of time)
Maritime climates are:
Areas that are close to oceans or large seas located on the coast of a land mass (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, BC)
Contintental climates are:
Far from oceans and large seas, located in the interior of a large land mass (Saskatchewan, Manitoba)
What are the 6 factors that determine climate?
Latitude, Ocean currents, Winds and air masses, Elevation, Releif, Near water (LOWERN)
Why is it that when you get closer to the equator its warmer rather then farther? What is this called?
Due to the curvature of the earth, the suns rays hit the part of the globe that sticks out first and more concentrated, and spreads out as the globe moves back. (This is called latitude)
What can warmer air hold more of?
Moisture
What is an ocean current?
A river within the ocean water that can be warmer or cooler then the part of the ocean its in (if its from the south=warmer, if its from the north=cooler)
What can an ocean current affect?
the temperature of the current can affect the air and weather (fog) above.
An air mass is :
A large volume of air that takes on the climate conditions of the area it came from
An air mass formed over water is :
Moist and humid
An air mass formed over land is :
Dry
Established patterns of air masses are :
Prevailing winds
Most our prevailing winds come from the west, what are these called?
Westerlies
Westerlies are controlled by a ‘jet stream’ what is a jet stream!
A current of fast-moving air high in the atmosphere
