Q

Maritime climates are:

A

Areas that are close to oceans or large seas located on the coast of a land mass (Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, BC)

Q

Contintental climates are:

A

Far from oceans and large seas, located in the interior of a large land mass (Saskatchewan, Manitoba)

6
Q

Why is it that when you get closer to the equator its warmer rather then farther? What is this called?

A

Due to the curvature of the earth, the suns rays hit the part of the globe that sticks out first and more concentrated, and spreads out as the globe moves back. (This is called latitude)

Q

What is an ocean current?

A

A river within the ocean water that can be warmer or cooler then the part of the ocean its in (if its from the south=warmer, if its from the north=cooler)

15
Q

Westerlies are controlled by a ‘jet stream’ what is a jet stream!

16
Q

Where is it colder in a jet stream?

A

North of the jet stream is colder then the south

17
Q

What happens when a jet stream moves northward in the summer?

A

we get warmer weather because it comes from closer to the equator and in the winter we get the opposite affect

18
Q

what are the full names of cA, cT, mP, mT

A

Continental Arctic, continental Tropic, maritime Polar, maritime Tropic

19
Q

What happens to the temperature when you get more elevated?

A

It decreases about 1 degree celsius per 100m up.

20
Q

What is elevation?

A

Altitude above ground

21
Q

What happens to air as it rises?

A

It expands due to the decrease in air pressure, resulting in less oxygen

22
Q

What is relief?

A

As air is forced over mountain barriers, it cools and creates precipitation

23
Q

What is the moderating affect and how does it affect the maritime regions’ seasons?

A

In the summer, the body of water is still cooler from the winter, when the wind blows over the water it matches the temperature of the water thus becoming cooler, the opposite affect happens in the winter ( creating warmer winers ).

24
Q

What does the temperature look like when you get farther from water?

A

The temperature range is greater since there is no water to influence the temperature. (resulting in hot summers and cold winters).

25
Q

How do urban areas effect temperature?

A

The areas near large cities have higher temperatures have higher temperatures because the pavement, cars and buildings absorb and reradiate more of the suns energy the natural areas.
